Georgia ratifies defense and security treaty

The Georgian parliamentary committee for defense and security has considered documents introduced by President Mikheil Saakashvili. One of them is the treaty on military and financial cooperation of Turkey and Georgia, the parliamentary press service has reported today.

According to the document, Turkey will provide Georgia with a financial aid of $507,000 for modernization of the Marneuli air base and purchases of goods and services for military purposes.

The committee considered the bill on state compensations and scholarships. The bill was scrapped for violating article 67 of the Georgian Constitution, stating that legislative initiative of the president is only possible in exceptional cases.

MP Irakly Sesiashvili motivated the decline of the bill by stating that the Cabinet had initiated a similar bill and had discussed it in the first reading.
