Georgian parliament to consider new constitutional project

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili introduced the new project of the Constitution to the parliament, 1news.az reports, citing the parliament’s press-service.

The project was approved on July 19th by the state constitutional commission.

The new project involves redistribution of power between the top authorities, where elements of a parliamentary republic dominate. At the latest plenary session the parliament will establish a special commission, which will organize public consideration of the project. The commission will consist of the parliamentary majority, opposition and experts. The project of the Constitution can be seen on a web-site, where people can express their opinions.

At the end of August the commission will introduce adjustments. The vice-speaker of the parliament, Irakliy Machavariani, said that it is a very important state act. He noted that everyone will have 2 months to express their views on the project.

Machavariani said that the document gives more power to the government, part of the president’s power will be handed to the premier.

The parliament will start discussing the project a month after its publication. The new Constitution will be passed if two thirds of the parliament vote for it.
