President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy said in Vilnius that he was familiar with members of the Eurasian Union, an integration project under formation, but he could not understand the point of the organization, Interfax reports.
He noted that it was a project totally different from the European Union, an alliance of democratic governments with common values and economic interests.
Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus have formed the Eurasian Customs Union. It is planned to transform into the Eurasian Economic Union by 2015.
Many consider the Eurasian Customs Union a competitive project of the Eastern Partnership of the EU. Polish former Defense Minister Bogdan Klich noted that Ukraine will face the biggest impact of the competition between Moscow and Brussels.
