Ramazan Abdulatipov stands up for wrestling

The acting president of Dagestan, Ramazan Abdulatipov, has sent a
letter to the president of the Russian Olympic Committee, Alexander
Zhukov, in which, on behalf of the people of the republic, he asked
for the necessary steps to be taken to keep combat sports in the program of the
Summer Olympics of 2020, the press service of the Republic of Dagestan
reports.

Abdulatipov writes in the letter that he has received numerous
requests from residents of the region who have expressed their
concern at the situation. The people of Dagestan, which has won 16
gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze Olympic medals in wrestling, "fundamentally
disagree with the fact that these important decisions are being taken
in secret, without a proper public discussion, without consulting
millions of fans of wrestling around the world," his letter reads.

The letter also mentions that the 2000 Olympic champion in freestyle
wrestling, Dagestani native Sagid Murtazaliev, has already announced
that he will reject his gold medal in protest at the decision of
the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee.
