Germany thought about lifting the ban on arms sales to the Syrian rebels
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said today that the
government is ready to consider lifting the ban on arms sales by the
European Union to Syrian militants. He added that the changes to the
list of EU sanctions against Syria were made two weeks ago.
Earlier today, the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said that
France and the United Kingdom do not see obstacles in order to cancel
the arms embargo, bypassing the EU sanctions. Fabius said that Paris
and London are already discussing the matter among themselves, while
waiting for the EU's decision.
In all likelihood, this statement of Westerwelle is a concession the
French side, which is confirmed by RIA Novosti source in the German
Foreign Ministry. "If an important partner of the EU ... considers
changing decisions on sanctions necessary, we are certainly willing to
discuss it in the EU", said the official.
