The Armenian community of Georgia has demanded ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages Georgia signed in 1999. President Mikheil Saakashvili says that the charter threatens national security, Georgia Online reports.
Urges to ratify the charter were heard in the Akhalkalaki District of the Samtskhe-Javakheti Province, as stated by Hamlet Movsesyan, speaker of the local parliament.
He admitted that the initiative belonged to the Georgian Dream coalition of Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Georgian State Minister for Reintegration Paata Zakareishvili said that Saakashvili had been lobbying passing of the charter in 1999.
