Caspian fleet remains independent military unit

The Caspian fleet will remain as an independent military unit of the Russian Armed Forces, a high-ranking official of the Main Staff of the Russian Navy told RIA Novosti in Moscow on Friday.

Some media reported earlier that the process of reforming the Russian military may take away the independence of the Caspian fleet and merge it with the Black Sea fleet.

The source still did not exclude the possibility of the Caspian fleet becoming part of the Black Sea fleet in the future.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in the middle of July that he signed a decree forming 4 strategic commands and a single system of material-technical support. The decree involves establishment of 4 military districts and 4 strategic commands. Moscow and Leningrad military districts will turn into the Western military district with the Northern and Baltic fleets part of it. The North Caucasian military district will be turned into the Southern military district with the Black Sea fleet as part of it. On the basis of the Privolzhsko-Uralskiy military district and the western part of the Siberian military district the Central military district will be established. The remaining part of the Siberian military district and the Far East military district will be established as the Eastern military district, with the Pacific fleet as part of it.
