Magomed-Sultan Magomedov was unanimously elected new Dagestani
parliamentary speaker by all 53 lawmakers present in the chamber on
Wednesday, a VC correspondent in Makhachkala said.
Former speaker Magomed Suleimanov stepped down after being appointed
director of Dagestan’s compulsory medical insurance scheme.
.
The change of speaker is connected with the necessity of preserving
interethnic harmony in the republic. According to tradition, the three
major offices in the country - the president, the speaker of the
People's Assembly and the prime minster are distributed between the
three most numerous ethnic groups.
The largest ethnic group is the Avars, the second largest the Dargins,
and the third the Kumyks.
Since a Dargin - Magomedaslam Magomedov - replaced Avar Muchu Alyev as
president and Magomed Abdullaev was appointed prime minister in place
of Kumyk Shamil Zainalov, Magomed-Sultan Magomedov was elected speaker
instead of the Dargin Magomed Suleimanov.
