Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed the federal law allowing regions to choose whether to elect governors directly or at legislative assemblies, the portal of legal information reports.
If regions scrap direct elections, parties of regional and federal parliaments will introduce three candidates for governor each. The president will choose any three for voting.
Dagestani acting President Ramazan Abdulatipov said that his republic will not have direct elections. Ingush Leader Yunus-Bek Yevkurov is fine with both general elections and voting at the parliament.
