Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is paying a working visit to Turkmenistan, the Russian Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Department said.

'Russia appreciates its relations with Turkmenistan and attaches great importance to further strengthening and developing mutually beneficial cooperation in  the political, trade-economic, cultural, educational and other fields,' a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Lavrov had a meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The two sides discussed prospects for expanding joint economic relations, trade and intensifying cooperation between Russian and Turkmen entities.

Special attention was paid to cooperation in developing humanitarian cooperation and implementing the existing bilateral agreements in this field.

Lavrov expressed gratitude to Turkmenistan for its traditional support of Russian initiatives in the UN.

He also stressed that Russia and Turkmenistan are interested in the organization of the Caspian Summit.  The ecology of the Caspian See should become the main question of the summit. "We support the idea that the Caspian states should solve this problem together," Lavrov said.
