President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy said that intensified development of relations with Azerbaijan was a new goal of the EU. It has been a state for transit since the creation of the Silk Road, Trend reports.
Azerbaijan has demonstrated impressive economic growth and the EU wants to keep the positive processes going, Rompuy continues. Baku plays an important role in global and regional security.
Rompuy emphasized that Azerbaijan was important as a reliable strategic partner in energy. The EU supports all projects of the Southern Gas Corridor and the Trans-Caspian Pipeline.
The EU is one of the main priorities of Azerbaijan. They will develop partnership based on mutual understanding and respect.
According to the memorandum of understanding and strategic partnership in energy signed by Azerbaijan and EU in 2006, the strategic partnership between the two states may expand, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said.
He noted that they should cooperate in all fields. Azerbaijan wants to develop relations beyond the European Neighbourhood Policy and the Eastern Partnership.
