Russia will ship two artillery battalions of S-300 PMU-2 ‘Favorit’ AA missile complexes to Azerbaijan, the newspaper ‘Vedomosti’ reports on Thursday, citing a source in MIC.
Azerbaijani Defense Ministry and ‘Rosoboronexport’ signed the agreement last year but it has not been reported until recently. According to ‘Vedomosti’ the contract is worth $300 million. It is the most expensive single purchase of new equipment in the history of post-Soviet republics.
The source said that the contract is already being realized and will be fulfilled in the next 1-2 years.
Such AA complexes have already been shipped to Algiers and China. A contract was also signed with Iran. In early June, the UN SC passed a resolution introducing new sanctions against Iran due to its refusal to stop uranium enrichment. The S-300 complex shipment to Iran is affected by the sanctions.
