European Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle have called on Georgia to abstain from political prosecutions.
The EU officials believe that Georgia will ensure free trials for former officials, RIA Novosti reports.
The statement came after the recent arrest of former prime minister Vano Merabishvili, which was immediately condemned by President Mikheil Saakashvili, who said that the case was politically motivated.
