Russia and Armenia will sign a protocol introducing changes to the agreement on a Russian military base on the territory of Armenia. According to the document, the Russian military base in Armenia will protect the interests of Russia in providing security in the republic, together with Armenia, Interfax reports.
To achieve this goal Russia will assist in providing Armenia with military equipment. The military formations of the Russian base are carried out based on a mutual agreement between the sides; the agreement of collective security of May 15th, 1992; the agreement of friendship, cooperation and mutual help between Azerbaijan and Russia of August 29th 1997 and the laws of both countries.
Article 26 says that the agreement remains in force for 49 years and can be prolonged for 5-year periods, unless one of the sides informs in written form within 6 months before the end of a period that it intends to terminate the agreement. The protocol will undergo ratification.
