CSTO to protect its sphere of influence after NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at an unofficial meeting of CSTO leaders in Bishkek that the organization should enforce security in the light of NATO's withdrawal from Afghanistan, RIA Novosti reports.

Putin called the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces and peacekeepers the new guarantees of security. The forces will hold drills in Belarus this year. Peacekeepers will train at the Chebarkul Range.

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev said that enforcement of security in the CSTO zone was the topic of the unofficial talks.

Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev said that the security structure of the CSTO zone of responsibility was the only topic for discussion at the summit.
