Former Georgian prime minister and minister of internal affairs Vano Merabishvili is being accused of abuse of power. The Georgian chief prosecutor's office says the former minister is responsible for violence committed on May, 2011, when the police broke up an opposition rally. Two people died in the clashes.
The former official has previously been arrested on charges of corruption.
Merabishvili is an author of the democratic police reform and currently heads the pro-president United National Movement party. He was expected to run for president later this year and is believed to be one of the major opponents of incumbent Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.
