Over 40 countries, including Russia and China, will attend the Friends of Syria Conference hosted by Tehran today, Iran.ru reports.
Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, were invited for the talks.
The conference was organized to encourage dialogue of Syrian opposition and government, as stated by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdolahian. He expressed hope that the international conference in Geneva will contribute to the peaceful process. The Geneva conference should continue the dialogue started in June 2012.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insists that Iran should join the conference for Syria organized by the US and Russia in Geneva.
