Turkish police break up opposition rally in Istanbul

The Turkish police have broke up an opposition rally in Istanbul. Police officers have used gas and water cannon.

The opposition activists were protesting against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They demanded the secular society established by the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk), saying that the AKP is promoting Islamism.
