Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin today announced is decision to resign and hold the first direct elections for the head of the Russian capital city in 10 years. The elections are expected to be held in September 2013.
"I will soon apply to the president so that he sets the date for direct elections for the mayor of Moscow," Sobyanin said today at a meeting of the Moscow Public Chamber.
Sobyanin is going to run for mayor himself. The ruling United Russia party has already announced that it would support his candidacy.
