Russia gets chairmanship of UN Security Council

From the 1st of August Russia is to be the chairman of the United Nations Security Council for one month. On the 2nd of August the Permanent Representative of the Russian Ferderation to the UN, Vitaliy Churkin, will tell journalists about the upcoming work programme, which includes UN peace-support missions to Iraq and Lebanon, the situation in Kosovo and the Middle East. The council is expected to return to the discussion of Somali piracy. The UN mission's future actions in eastern Chad and the Central African Republic are scheduled to be decided in August. The Security Council is responsible for maintaining international peace, and its resolutions are obligatory on all UN members.
