The European Union has called on the Turkish authorities to investigate the way the police broke up protest rallies in Istanbul and punish those responsible for the violence.
"Peaceful demonstrations of protest are a legal way to show one's political position. An excessive use of violence in such a case has no place in a democratic society," the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbouring Policy, Štefan Füle, said.
