Russian peacekeepers can replace Austrians in Golan Heights, Putin says

Russian peacekeepers can replace the Austrian contingent in the Golan Heights, Russian President Vladimir Putin says.

As the Austrian Chancellor has recently said that the country was going to withdraw its military contingent in the Golan Heights, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Russian peacekeepers can replace the Austrian forces in the region.

The Russian President made such a statement today at his meeting with Russian officers.

"Taking into consideration the difficult situation in the region, we could replace the Austrian contingent in the area between the Israeli and the Syrian forces," Putin said.

In response to Putin's statement the United Nations said that it welcomed any efforts to maintain peace in the Middle East.
