Pyatigorsk has hosted an international conference devoted to new challenges to regional security sponsored by the Russian Foreign Ministry and Nato. The main part of the event was a video conference with Brussels.
The political adviser to the Nato secretary general, James Appathurai, took part in the video conference.
Appathurai stressed that the alliance is interested in enhanced ties with Russia, even though the parties have different positions on several issues, including the Russian-Georgian conflict.
He also said that Nato was going to pay more attention to the Caucasus."This is a very important region. We should pay more attention to it," Appathurai said.
