Turkish police clear Taksim Square in Istanbul

There is an uneasy calm in Istanbul’s Taksim Square after the Turkish police forces fought running battles with anti-government protesters overnight, the Euronews TV channel reports on Wednesday.

By dawn the square was largely deserted, allowing traffic to resume for the first time in nearly two weeks.

Some of the worst clashes since the unrest began happened on Tuesday, as police used tear gas against protesters and fired water cannon to clear the area.
