Syria approves Russia’s plan to send peacekeepers to Golan Heights

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad has approved the idea of Russia to replace Austrian peacekeepers at the Golan Heights.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Rio-de-Janeiro that presence of Russian peacekeepers in the area needed approval of Israel and Syria and UN secretary general. The UNSC will be informed about the secretary genera’s decision.

The protocol signed for the agreement of Syria and Israel in 1974 rules out presence of peacekeepers of permanent members of the UNSC. Russia believes that the protocol should be replaced by a new document.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Faina Kirshenbaum said that Israel was not opposed to Russian peacekeepers at the Golan Heights.
