Georgia simplifies citizenship application for Meskhetian Turks

The Georgian Minister of Refugees and Accommodation, David Darakhvelidze, said today after a government meeting that it will become easier for Meskhetian Turks with repatriate status to obtain Georgian citizenship.

"For Muslim Meskhetians with repatriate status the procedure for obtaining citizenship will be simplified, which will further contribute to the implementation of our commitments to the Council of Europe. Those who have been granted the status will be able to come to the consulate, where the data is already prepared, and will be assisted in completing the document," Trend quoted the minister.

The minister said that out of 8,900 applicants to receive repatriate status, 1053 received it, while none of them received Georgian citizenship because "they state that they cannot fill out the application in Georgian and English languages correctly. Now they can get help in the consular offices, and the procedure will be simplified," Darakhvelidze said.
