Russian Foreign Ministry: Priority of Russia as Caucasian state is to ensure peace and stability in region

A meeting of the board of the Russian Foreign Ministry on "problems of our policy in the South Caucasus" took place today, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov. It was noted that the priority for Russia is to ensure peace and stability in the South Caucasus, the statement the Foreign Ministry reads.

"The South Caucasus is a region that is historically associated with the vital interests of Russia. Our most important priority as a Caucasian state is to ensure peace and stability, strengthen good-neighborly relations and joint development of the significant economic potential of the region for the benefit of people living here," the  statement released on Monday on the website of the Ministry reads.

It has been reported that during the meeting various aspects of Russian diplomacy in relation to implementation of the tasks in the Southern Caucasus, which were identified by the Presidential decree of May 7, 2012 № 605 "On measures to implement the foreign policy of the Russian Federation", and the Foreign Policy Conception of the Russian Federation, approved on February 12, 2013, have been discussed.
