Georgia to continue reforms to join NATO

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the alliance was praising Georgia’s contribution to the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, but the republic needed to realize many reforms in order to become its member, Georgia Online reports.

Rasmussen expressed hope that achievements of Georgian Prime Minister Ivanishvili would be continued by successors, should he resign.

Commenting on relations of Georgia and Russia, Rasmussen expressed concerns about the barbed wire set on their border and called it a violation of the cease-fire agreement reached in 2008. He demanded Russia to respect Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The secretary general added that Georgia and Ukraine will become NATO members as soon at they comply with the criteria of membership, as noted at the Bucharest summit.
