Orthodox Jews to be conscripted into the military service in Israel

According to a new regulation adopted by the Israeli government, Orthodox Jews will be conscripted into military service. Those who don't appear in enlistment offices will be charged with a criminal offence.

Only 1,800 Orthodox Jews will be granted a draft deferment in order to finish their education in religious schools.

"We will implement the new regulations gradually, taking into consideration the specific character of the Orthodox community," Israeli prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu says.
