Georgian politicians are preparing for the presidential elections to be held on October 27. The leader of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Georgiy Targamadze, one of the candidates for the post of the President of Georgia, talked about his program for the further development of the country in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza.

"Our movement is only 4.5 years old, but we have already taken part in two parliamentary elections, elections of the Supreme Council of the Adjara Autonomous Republic and municipal elections," Targamadze said. "Our party has a clear program for the development of the country, and we believe that last year's parliamentary elections were an important stage in the development of the political system in Georgia. A new era of the formation of a truly European country with pluralistic democracy is beginning. KDH and myself were the initiators of the new constitutional model, which comes into force after the presidential elections. Georgia is transforming from a presidential into a parliamentary republic. Yet, because the president is elected by direct vote, he will have a mandate from the entire population."

"As for the elections, we are currently working on our pre-election tactics. We intend to build on our human resources, and the regional structure. Our focus is on the middle class, it is the foundation of the future of Georgia. People that make up this layer do not wait for government's assistance for the development and maintenance of small or medium-sized business. An important part of our program is development of regionalism. If the middle class is be influential, Georgia will become a more stable state, and revolutionary ideas will forever lose their political relevance," the candidate underlined.

As for the economic component of the electoral program of the Christian Democrats, according to Targamadze, it is significantly different from that of other competitors.

"We have a very clear agenda. This is a model of a socially-responsible economy, which has already been tested by the Christian Democrats in Central and Eastern Europe. An illustrative example is Germany, where the Christian Democrats have offered the public an excellent program of social and economic development that enjoys the support of a large majority of voters for a long period of time. A key point here is social responsibility. I think people will be able to accept this concept, which has become the main engine of progress in many developed countries," the leader of the Christian Democrats said.

As for the political aspect of the electoral program of the party, in the words of its leader, in the short term the objective of the party is to create the conditions for lasting peace and stability, as well as the creation of systemic conditions for non-use of force to resolve conflict issues.

"The policy towards Russia will be very difficult. In many ways, for the reason that Russian policy towards Georgia and our region as a whole has not yet been fully formed. In my opinion, this is most damaging thing for Russia. I think that the Orthodox Churches play a very important role in the two countries. But, in any case, the territorial integrity of Georgia will remain a steadfast and enduring value," Targamadze concluded.
