Iran and Azerbaijan to fill Urmia with water from River Araz

Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pakayin said on Wednesday that Iran and Azerbaijan had been cooperating in exploitation of River Araz for over 42 years. He added that Iran was using Araz to fill Lake Urmia, Trend reports.

The diplomat reminded that Azerbaijan and Iran had signed an agreement to exploit the river for 2-3 years.

Iranian Vice President Mohammedrza Rahimi and Energy Minister Mejid Namju opened the water-processing facility to pump water from River Araz to Lake Urmia and the plains of Julfa, Marand, Shebestar and Tabriz. A foreign investor is taking part in the project and has a contract worth 875 million euro. The project solves water problems of 8 cities and 81 villages.
