World famous British comedian, actor and author Stephen Fry has called upon UK Prime Minister David Cameron and the International Olympic Committee to boycott the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games due to Russia's severe violations of human rights.
The statement was made amid a continuing anti-gay campaign launched by the Russian authorities.
In an open letter published on his official website Stephen Fry said that the treatment of homosexuals in Russia was similar to the persecution suffered by Jews during the Second World War
"An absolute ban on the Russian Winter Olympics of 2014 on Sochi is simply essential. Stage them elsewhere - in Utah, Lillyhammer, anywhere you like. At all costs, Putin cannot be seen to have the approval of the civilised world," Stephen Fry wrote.
Stephen Fry is a vehement opponent of Russia's laws prohibiting the so-called "promotion of homosexuality among minors" and has even travelled to St. Petersburg, where he met with local lawmaker Vitaly Milonov, the author of the region's anti-gay legislation.
