Obama meeting Putin in such circumstances would be pointless, US official says

A decision to cancel President Barack Obama's meeting with Vladimir Putin has been made, as there is no sense in such a move in the present circumstances, the president's deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes says.

Already-tense bilateral relations were damaged after Russia announced it would grant asylum to former CIA employee Edward Snowden.

"We will continue our cooperation with Russia, but both the president and his team think that there is no sense in such a meeting now," the official is quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
