General Prosecutor's Office completes investigation into five assassination attempts on President of Abkhazia

The Investigative Department of the Prosecutor General of Abkhazia has completed investigations into criminal cases of five attempts on the life of President Alexander Ankvab that occurred between 2007 and 2012, the representative of the Attorney General said.

There are 10 people accused in five assassination attempts, one of whom has died. In the process of investigating the assassination which occurred on February 22nd 2012, 33 new offences were discovered and 16 criminal cases opened. Among them two criminal cases of trafficking in explosives, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the representative of the Attorney General of Abkhazia.

The criminal case is contained in 40 volumes and more than 50 items of physical evidence, including a large number of weapons and ammunition. 

The motorcade of President Ankvab was ambushed on February 22 last year. After a landmine explosion on the route of the presidential motorcade, which occurred at about 08:25 MSK on the Gudauta-Sukhumi highway, he was fired at from machine guns and grenade launchers. Bodyguards of the president were able to withdraw his car and returned fire. As a result of the shooting several security officers were wounded and two were killed. Less than a month later the police apprehended suspects.
