Tskhinvali to ask Russia and France for help

The president of South Ossetia, Eduard Kokoity, declared that he will address the Russian and French Presidents, the authors of the ‘Medvedev- Sarkozy plan', aimed at finding a solution to the Georgian conflict, directly, if the discussions in Geneva don’t produce any positive result, reports RIA-Novosti.

These have been held since October 2008 on the initiative of the Russian and French sides. Delegations from Abkhazia, Georgia, the USA, Russia and South Ossetia as well as from the EU, the UN and the OSCE participate in the talks on an equal basis. However, the talks haven’t yet managed to produce a document prohibiting the use of force in the conflict. According to Kokoity, such a document can’t be worked out due to a lack of initiative on the part of European mediators and the reluctance of the USA.

The possible appeal to the Russian and French Presidents will address the question of the inefficiency of certain mediators as well as international observers in Georgia, who have failed to prevent the Georgian authorities from revanchist sentiments and re-arming.

Mr Kokoity expressed his concern that, de facto, South Ossetia and Abkhazia  are not being treated as equals in the Geneva discussions and stated the desire of the Republics to enjoy equal rights in the international community.
