EU considers anti-Egyptian sanctions

Ambassadors of 28 EU states met in Brussels today to discuss new sanctions against the Egyptian military, RIA Novosti cites the press service of EU Chief Diplomat Catherine Ashton.

The officials discussed halts to financial and other forms of aid for Egypt, bans for weapons, equipment and other means of repression.

President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso urged the sides of conflict in Egypt to stop escalation of violence. EU authorities said that the government and military were responsible for the situation.

The disorders in Egypt have been ongoing since the fall of President Mohamed Morsi. The country is in the state of emergency. Curfews were imposed in 14 cities.
