Investigation of Syria 'chemical attacks' will strengthen Assad - experts

The UN Security Council demanded an investigation into chemical attacks seen in Damascus and reported by media sources yesterday. 35 states signed a letter to UN secretary general to investigate and find those responsible for using chemical weapons.


Professor Ake Sellstrom (Sweden) is in charge of the group of international experts investigating chemical attacks in Syria.


Alexander Ignatenko, Doctor of Philosophy and specialist of Islamic studies, emphasized that the Syrian government proved its innocense by simply letting the UN special commission of experts to investigate the incident. He reminded that Turkey had detained a group of Syrian rebels with chemical weapons earlier. Ignatenko noted that Al Qaeda was the most likely organization to use chemical weapons in Syria.


Marina Sapronova, Doctor of History and Professor of MGIMO, said that the investigation by the UN special commission will encourage the world society to take the Russian approach for settling the Syrian crisis. Russian specialists concluded that sarin bombs had been used by terrorists. If the international community becomes convinced of the fact, it would be a good opportunity to start peace talks, she assumes.
