Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov discussed the South Stream gas pipeline in a telephone call. The two leaders also discussed the issue of fighting the fires that have spread across much of the central European part of Russia.
"South Stream" is a new way of transporting Russian gas over the Black Sea to Eastern and central Europe. Russia has concluded treaties with Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Greece, Slovenia, Croatia and Austria to build a pipeline on their territory. It is planned that the gas pipeline will be finished by 2015.
Another issue discussed was the building of a nuclear station in Belene. In 2005 the tender for building was won by "Atomstroyexport". In 2009, RWE one of the biggest investors in the project left and now Bulgaria has to search for another investor. Sergey Kirienko, head of "Rossatom" said that Russia can carry on building the station until a new investor is found.
