Authority of Georgian CEC head halted

Authority of Zurab Kharatishvili, head of the Georgian Central Electoral Commission who filed a resignation note on August 12, has been halted today, News Georgia reports.

The parliament had 15 days to consider the halt, but no off-schedule session was organized for the issue and his authority was halted automatically.

The official wants resignation two and a half months ahead of the presidential polls of October 27 to have an opportunity to register as one of the candidates.

Tamar Zhvania, head of electoral projects of the UN Development Fund, may become one of the candidates to replace Kharatishvili. The Georgian president presents three candidates to head the CEC 15 days after resignation of its incumbent. The CEC will elect its head 5 days after introduction of the candidates.
