Mitrofanov emphasized that there was no question “to be or not to be” on a military operation in Syria. “The world is awaiting a new war. It seems for some parties the question is settled. The point is in the kind of attack,” the MP said.
According to him, the developments over Syria are under way according to the scenario developed by the West in the 50-60s. “The Americans have a group of countries oriented them – Saudi Arabia and Qatar - so regimes which are oriented to Saudi Arabia and Qatar come to office,” Mitrofanov explained. The politician says that the West’s goal is not stability in the region, but in establishing weak small regimes in countries.
At the same time there is a threat to the USA’s traditional ally – Israel. “In the last 15 years Saudi Arabia and Qatar’s drive has surpassed Israel’s. Even though the Americans fulfil their diplomatic duties and officially treat Israel nicely, it is obvious that their interests are in another place where oil is flowing,” Mitrofanov thinks.
Vitaly Naumkin said that “the situation is very tense. Everything is done roughly. Obama says that the aim is not regime change, but revenge for using chemical weapons, even though it's revenge on a regime which hasn’t been proved guilty. Why don’t they wait till the end of the experts’ work?”
According to him, the motivation of the West is unclear, and this worsens the situation. “I don’t understand why they are doing it. Obama, who has built his strategy on denying the one-sided approach of Bush, is doing the same things. We are returning to Bush’s era. The majority of the Americans are against it,” Naumkin stated.
The expert emphasizes that Russian-American relations will suffer a lot.
