British Prime Minister David Cameron said that the UK will not attack Syria without permission of the UNSC. Canada and 12 other NATO members announced that they will not join any operation in Syria. The US said yesterday that it will not repeat the Iraqi or Libyan scenario or attack President Bashar al-Assad’s regime alone. US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel plans to form a coalition of states.
Peter Stegny, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia and an expert of the Russian Council for International Affairs, hailed the reluctance to attack Syria. He noted that 60% of the US population, 70% of German, over 50% in England and France, 62% in Israel were against attacks on Syria.
Stegny praised President Obama’s resistance to all the pressure he was facing in the country and from regional allies. The ambassador pointed out senator McCain and Saudi Arabia.
Stegny believes that cancelling the operation would improve Obama’s image.
