Moscow considers the murder of the Russian diplomat Dmitry Vishernev in Abkhazia a heinous crime aimed at undermining Russian-Abkhaz relations and stability in the region, a Russian Foreign Ministry statement posted today on the website of the department says.
The Abkhazian prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation into the murder case.
The department also noted that the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab, had taken the investigation under his personal control, and that the competent authorities of the Republic, in cooperation with representatives of the Russian Federal Security Service, were conducting the necessary investigation.
"Abkhazia is deeply shocked by the incident. The heinous murder of a Russian diplomat is our common tragedy," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia said.
As previously reported by VK , the first secretary of the Embassy of Russia in Abkhazia, Dmitry Vishernev, was shot in the head in the garage of his home in Sukhumi on Monday at about 08:30 MSK. His wife was injured and taken to hospital.
