Azerbaijan's political integration into the European Union would be possible only in case of mutual understanding of common goals. There is no such understanding at the moment, the head of the South Caucasus political analysis club Ilgar Velizade believes.
The expert made the remark while commenting on Azerbaijani deputy foreign minister Makhmud Madedguliyev's statement.
The official said at a press conference today that the EU and Azerbaijan may sign several agreements concerning the visa regime and cooperation in various fields such as education, transport and agriculture during the coming summit in Vilnius.
According to Velizade, one should understand that Azerbaijan has always been oriented towards a multi-vector foreign policy. The country is interested in successful cooperation with the European Union, but it wants to keep good ties with Russia and Iran.
Azerbaijan has never wanted to join Nato or the EU, he says. "It's not our goal, neither now, nor in future. The European Union isn't pursuing such a goal either," he said.
