Syrian President Bashar al-Assad aid that transfer of chemical weapons under international control will take about a year and will need about $1 billion, RIA Novosti reports.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed disposal of Syrian chemical weapons by mid-2014 at a meeting in Geneva on September 14. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will develop the plan to realize the initiative.
Syrian authorities sent letters to join the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons last week. Syria will become one of the 190 members of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on October 14.
