Iranian President Hassan Rouhani today called on all states in the Middle East to eliminate their weapons of mass destruction. He stated this in an interview with U.S. broadcaster NBC.
"We are one of the countries that stand for peace, stability and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction in the region," Rouhani said, stressing: "Under no circumstances would we try to get hold of weapons of mass destruction, including a nuclear bomb, and we will never do so. We are interested only in the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes," ITAR-TASS quoted the Iranian leader.
At the same time, Rouhani did not give a direct answer to the question of whether Iran can guarantee that Syria will fully liquidate its existing chemical weapons. "We are not the Syrian government," Rouhani said.
