The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has assured the National Olympic Committee of Georgia that Abkhazia and South Ossetia will not be able to participate in the Sochi Olympics as independent states.
"The committee received a letter from the IOC, which states that, according to the Olympic Charter, the IOC does not recognize Abkhazia or South Ossetia, and recognizes only the National Olympic Committee of Georgia, whose jurisdiction covers the entire territory of Georgia, as recognized by the UN and the international community," Interfax quotes the letter with reference to the National Olympic Committee of Georgia.
The IOC's letter was a response to Georgia's request to the IOC and Management Group of the Sochi Olympics. The Georgian side has requested that Abkhazia and South Ossetia be prevented from participating in the Olympic Games as independent states.
