The S-300 air defense system located in Abkhazia is strictly defensive and does not violate Russia's international obligations, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Andrey Nesterenko claimed on Friday, reports RIA-Novosti. Locating the S-300 system cannot destabilise the situation in the region, he added, the aim is to provide for security of the young republic. Abkhazian Foreign Minister Maxim Gvinjia claimed that the placement of the air defense complex is possible according to the military agreement between Moscow and Sukhumi, signed in September 2009.
