PKK leader calls for Democratic Islamic Congress

The jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has issued a call for a Democratic Islamic Congress to convene in Diyarbakır against “groups betraying Islam, in particular al-Qaeda and al-Nusra,” Hürriyet Daily News reports Tuesday.

The message was brought by the Peace and Democracy Party's lawmakers who visited Öcalan on October 14 in the prison on the İmralı Island.

“Our people, both Alevi and Sunni, should conduct in-depth debates in this congress and it should conclude meaningful decisions and institutionalizations,” Öcalan is quoted as saying in his message.
