Turkey marks Republic Day

Turkey is marking Republic Day. Constitutional amendments passed on October 29, 1923, brought an end to the Ottoman Empire and witnessed the beginning of Turkey as a republic.

Sinan Ogan, a member of the Turkish parliament and head of the Turkish Center for Strategic Studies, said that the idea of a republic and democratic values led the path towards self-determination.

 

The expert noted that there were attempts to ditch the ideas of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Turkish Republic. Ogan said that all such attempts were failures. He emphasized that both the population and state authorities wanted to protect the republic.
