Azerbaijani president speaks at Baku International Humanitarian Forum

Baku is hosting the 3rd International Humanitarian Forum attended by Nobel Prize winners, representatives of international organizations and experts from over 100 countries. The first day was focused on multiculturalism. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev gave a speech on topical issues of globalizing world.

Aliyev said that 70% of the population of Azerbaijan had access to the Internet. However, many media sources focused on catastrophes and terrorist attacks. Aliyev urged mass media to give more attention to positive events. He warned that media sources would have greater responsibility.

The president noted that Azerbaijan was using its profits from natural resources to develop the economy, science and education. He reminded that Baku will host the first European Games in 2015.

Messages of Russian President Vladimir Putin, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon were read out and a video message of UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova was demonstrated.

Turkish 9th President Suleyman Demirel noted that the region was undergoing changes followed by alterations in world economic and political changes. He called for consolidation of the world to strengthen peace and stability. Demirel reminded that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict needed urgent settlement.

Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady of Azerbaijan, met Lilita Zatlers, wife of Latvian President Valdis Zatlers, Sheikh Hussa Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, Director of Dar Al-Asar Al-Islamiyeh.
